Dr. Sonika Soni Khar is primarily involved in teaching Design, Craft Studies and Innovation and Research and Research Methods to undergraduates, graduates, and master level students for the last 17 years.  Her Ph.D. titled research was based on the design process and had have led her to understand the gap between the Design process practiced in the industry to how it is been taught in the fashion design Institutes and to derive a method which can be applied while teaching. She has authored and presented several research papers, installations at national and international conferences. Her work focusses not only on theoretical research on Design Process/pedagogies but also on its application in product development (Fashion and Textiles) with a very close consideration of using craft and craft technique. She was involved in designing costumes for Oscar-nominated film in the foreign-language category “Paheli” directed by Amol Palekar in 2005. She has also published a book called DHAROHAR which is based on documentation of costumes and accessories in the collection of Kelkar Museum, Pune, Maharashtra published by Copal Publishing House. One of her garment entries called Ganga: to earth from heaven was selected as one of four finalists from India in World of Wearable Art (2018) in Wellington New Zealand.
